ICT Minister Mavetera vows to block smuggled phones from accessing local network services (video)

ICT Minister Mavetera vows to block smuggled phones from accessing local network services (video) – Ministries of ICT and Finance in Zimbabwe are putting their heads together to prevent phone smuggling into the country without paying duty.

The plan is to block mobile access to network services offered by Econet, NetOne, Telecel, and ISPs like Liquid.

By doing so, Minister Mavetera anticipates a fall in smuggling and ultimately a decrease in device prices.

Minister Mavetera made this statement during an occasion in Harare where the Media Institute of Southern Africa introduced an AI report.

While acknowledging the significance of reasonably priced connectivity, ICT Minister Mavetera stated that Starlink is not the exclusive satellite provider.

Zimbabwe’s ministry is seeking licenses for other satellite providers to operate in the area.

The researchers and speakers highlighted that insufficient internet access, especially via services such as Starlink, hinders the ability to harness the full potential of AI.

In her response, the ICT minister went on to declare that they are presently devising an Artificial Intelligence framework that will ultimately translate into an AI Policy.

In the previous week, Zimbabwe held discussions with Starlink’s officials to review its previous decision of prohibiting the latter from vending its satellite internet service for security purposes. Even though Starlink lacks authorization to purvey products in Zimbabwe, numerous businesses and persons are already availing of its internet service.
