Google’s AI tool no longer create images of people after a major social media spanking

Google’s AI tool no longer create images of people after a major social media spanking – Google has decided to put a pause on its artificial intelligence (AI) tool, known as Gemini, after it received backlash on social media for generating historically inaccurate images mainly depicting people of color instead of White people.

This blunder highlights the challenges AI tools still face in dealing with the concept of race. For instance, OpenAI’s Dall-E image generator has faced heat for propagating harmful racial and ethnic stereotypes at scale. Google’s efforts to combat this have backfired, making it difficult for the AI chatbot to produce images of White people.

Gemini and other AI tools such as ChatGPT are trained on vast amounts of online data. However, experts argue that AI tools have the potential to reproduce the race and gender biases embedded in the data. In one example, Gemini was asked by CNN to generate an image of a pope, but it produced an image of a man and woman, neither of whom were White. The tool also made errors when generating images of people in response to prompts such as “1943 German Soldier.”

However, the company acknowledged that it missed the mark. Jack Krawczyk, Google’s lead product director for Gemini, also explained on Wednesday that the company specifically designed its image generation capabilities to reflect its global user base. But, this incident is yet another setback for Google as it competes with OpenAI and other companies in the generative AI space.
