Nivea Now Cost ‘USD38’ At Zimbabwe’s Current Official Exchange Rate: Frustrated Consumers Cry Robbery

As cabinet plans probe after the spike in prices of basic goods, consumers are still taking a hit, reporting rapid price increase since the announcement of the new official rate.

Buyers are complaining in the comment sections of social media accounts alleging that prices have increased overnight at retailers with Nivea lotions priced at ZWL48.899 being the spark of the discussion.

One Twitter user labeled the new price tags as ‘madness on steroids’.

Another outraged Twitter user, award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono wrote,

“The cost of Nivea in Zimbabwe is now at an all time high of Z$42,899 a jar.

That is US$38 at Zimbabwe’s official exchange rate today.”

He went on to add that;

“In Zimbabwe Nivea Fresh Energy roll on is now seeking for US$6.54 or R120.

In South Africa it is selling for R26 or US$1.42.”

Some users noted that in addition of becoming more expensive, some products are becoming a little bit ‘imitated’ marking a continuation of fake products in the industry.

The thrown off balance consumers now hope for the authorities to fulfill the price control promise.

“The committee will investigate, monitor and make appropriate recommendations to cabinet with a view to bringing sanity to the situation,” said Information and Publicity Minister Monica Mutsvangwa in an emailed statement on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting.
