Finland Women Protest Against Monogamy Marriages

In Finland, polygamy is expressly forbidden and is legally deemed an offence, classified as bigamy. According to Finnish law, individuals are prohibited from being married to more than one person simultaneously. Furthermore, if an individual wishes to enter a subsequent marriage, the prior marriage must be legally terminated.

Interestingly, on December 30, 2023, a notable demonstration was organized by Finnish women advocating for a change in the prevailing marriage norms. The protesters expressed discontent with the societal expectation that men should only marry one wife.

Their motivation stemmed from the increasing population of unmarried women in Finland, prompting a call for a reconsideration of traditional marriage practices. The women demanded greater flexibility in marital arrangements, advocating for the acceptance of polygamous unions to address the demographic challenges they perceived in their country.
