‘Chips for Communion?’ Outrage As Italian Advert Shows Priest Offering Potato Chips As Holy Communion – A television advertisement in Italy has sparked outrage among Christians as it depicts nuns receiving potato chips instead of communion wafers.

The commercial, created by Amica Chips, shows young nuns in a convent happily discovering that their communion wafers have been replaced with crispy chips. The scene unfolds with a mother superior figure observing as the nuns laugh, revealing that she was the one who substituted the traditional communion elements with potato chips kept in the tabernacle.

Giovanni Baggio, the leader of AIART, a Catholic organization monitoring Italian media, condemned the ad as “blasphemy,” citing the sacred significance Christians attach to communion wafers symbolizing the body and blood of Christ.

Baggio criticized the 30-second commercial for trivializing a sacred practice and offending millions of practicing Catholics. The Catholic newspaper Avvenire echoed this sentiment in an editorial, decrying the reduction of Christ to a mere potato chip as debasing and vilifying.

Following the public outcry, Italy’s advertising standards authority, the IAP, ordered the removal of the commercial from television broadcasts. Amica Chips has a seven-day window to appeal this decision while the ad remains off the air. However, the order does not extend to online platforms.

Social media users joined the criticism, with one Instagram user denouncing the ad as blasphemy and urging respect for the Holy Eucharist. Others called for a boycott of Amica Chips.

The controversy highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious symbols and practices in public representations.
