Zimbabwe Elections 2023: Vote Counting Starts

Vote counting has started, and limited results are being made available locally, in Zimbabwe’s chaotic election.

But exactly when definitive numbers will be available is not at all clear yet.

In most parts of Zimbabwe, where voting went ahead on Wednesday, ballot boxes were being sent to command centres by 11:00 on Thursday.

Results are likely to be delayed in the important areas. A survey of polling agents after polling officially ended, showed that in Harare and Bulawayo – which are more likely to favour opposition candidates – more than 50% of polling stations did not open on time. In other areas, only some 20% of polling stations had delayed openings.

Statistics on how many people cast their ballots in different wards have also been made public.

Polling agents were submitting result forms, which are being steadily collated and verified, various people involved in the process told News24.

With those numbers, and results starting to go up outside voting stations, independent tabulators can now begin to compile their own numbers, and compare those with results provided by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

The ZEC has made no official announcements.
