“Rambai Makashinga” No More? Tambaoga Walks, Begs Chivhayo for Wheels

Prominent traditional musician Last Chiangwa, better known by his stage name Tambaoga, has publicly appealed to Wicknell Chivhayo for a car. Chivhayo, has garnered attention for his recent car donations to celebrities, musicians, and some reports say, ruling party loyalists.

Tambaoga, known for his hit song “Rambai Makashinga,” a pro-ZANU-PF jingle used during the party’s campaigns in the 2000s, acknowledges Chivhayo’s generosity in the video. “Tirikuona mhuri dzose dzawana hupenyu mumaoko enyu,” he says, which translates to “We have seen you donating cars to every family.”

Tambaoga then makes his plea, stating, “Madii kutibatsirawo tagona kufamba sevana vevamwe, tanzwa nekutimba pasi” (Can you please chip in so we can live like others, we are exhausted of walking on foot). He further emphasizes his loyalty to ZANU-PF while acknowledging the economic hardship many Zimbabweans face.

Tambaoga’s video has been met with significant backlash online. Many critics point to the message of his song “Rambai Makashinga,” which translates to “endure the hardships.” This song encouraged stoicism in the face of economic hardship.

Some netizens are questioning why Tambaoga, who once championed perseverance through hard times, is now seemingly contradicting that message by asking for a handout.

The video has added fuel to discussions about social inequality and economic struggles in Zimbabwe, with some suggesting that Tambaoga’s situation reflects a larger problem within the country.
