A child endangerment charge has been brought against 26-year-old Mariah Thomas in connection to one-month-old Za’Riah Mae who was found dead with ‘burn wounds’, as stated in the arrest warrant.

Police received a call on Friday reporting that a child was not breathing at the Kansas City home of the mother, just a day after Thomas’ birthday.

Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered that the infant was covered in burns and her clothing was melted onto her diaper.

According to a grieving acquaintance of Thomas who spoke to DailyMail, Za’Riah was a cheerful infant who was frequently smiling.

The acquaintance also indicated that Mariah Thomas’ mental health could have played a part in the tragic incident.

‘Mariah had mental issues from what I know and didn’t have the mindset of an adult, she thought like a child,’ the friend further mentioned that they spoke to the mother on Monday, signifying their acquaintance with her.

According to Za’Riah’s grandfather, he received a call from the child’s mother at around 1 pm on Friday, informing him that something was not right with the infant and he needed to come back home right away.

Upon coming back home, he immediately smelled smoke and noticed Za’Riah dead in her crib. Court filings indicate that Thomas informed him that she had “accidentally” placed the baby in the oven.

Police discovered Za’Riah inside her home, in a car seat, with “apparent thermal injuries” on several parts of her body.

Za’Riah was found in a dirty and possibly burnt bodysuit over her diaper, causing the outfit to appear melted together. Additionally, the investigators found a charred baby blanket was taken as evidence.

Thomas was taken to the police headquarters for questioning where she decided to exercise her Fifth Amendment right and remained silent. However, she agreed to allow detectives to obtain a blood sample and access the data on her phone.
