City marks World Bicycle Day

THE Harare City Council, in partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) and other local organisations, celebrated the World Bicycle Day in Harare yesterday by calling for the protection of child cyclists on the roads.

TSCZ representative, Jane Takwara, encouraged drivers to revisit the Highway Code to refresh their knowledge of all road rules.

“A few people read the Highway Code, which means most people who have licensed drivers do not know road rules and signs.

“We encourage everyone to reread the Highway Code and to also go for defensive driving,” she said.

She encouraged parents to teach their children road rules so that they grow up knowing safety precautions since cars were increasing day by day.

“During our time, kids had no need to be taught about road rules, but it is important now because times have changed.

“Kids grow up fast now and we have more vehicles in the country now.

“We have officers who move around schools teaching kids how to get into cars and how to get out of cars.

“We also tell them how to behave when they are in a bus, car or open truck.”

She said they also teach children about safe cycling and how to take care when they are cycling on public roads.

“We teach toddlers not to use the road as a playground because it is not safe for them to play around vehicles.”
