ZRP Vows to Take Action Against Officer Involved in Deadly Gweru Crash

ZRP Vows to Take Action Against Officer Involved in Deadly Gweru Crash – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed that the officer involved in a deadly high-speed chase in Gweru will face both criminal and disciplinary action, following widespread public outrage.
The accident, which occurred on April 28, 2025, along Bristol Road in Mkoba, claimed the lives of two individuals who were occupants of a Toyota Aqua.
The vehicle reportedly crashed into a tree while being pursued by Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba.
Eyewitness accounts and social media videos suggest the officer fled the scene after the fatal crash.

In an official statement dated April 29, ZRP acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and assured the public that the law will take its course.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that both criminal and disciplinary action will be taken on Constable Sakala for his conduct,” read part of the statement issued by Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The ZRP also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that investigations are underway.
The assurance from police comes amid growing criticism of road policing tactics and increasing calls for accountability.
Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono added to the pressure by alleging that the officer involved, known as Sakala or Sakhala, has a history of corruption and misconduct.
He urged the police to address the rise in unprofessional behaviour by officers during vehicle chases.
Social media has since erupted in fury, with users demanding justice and questioning why the officer fled the scene if the pursuit was lawful.
Public sentiment remains tense, as many view the ZRP’s latest statement as a critical test of whether police officers will be held to the same legal standards as civilians.
