Zimbabwean Police Officer Sentenced for B£ating Teacher During Investigation – A Zimbabwean police officer, Owen Manjengwa, has been convicted of ass@ulting a schoolteacher during the course of a criminal investigation in Chiredzi, drawing criticism over police conduct and @buse of authority.

The incident occurred on 21 February 2024, at approximately 3 PM at Mhlanguledzi Primary School in Chikombedzi, where Manjengwa—who is stationed at the Chikombedzi Police Station—approached the teacher as part of an investigation into a reported unlawful entry from the previous day.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the situation quickly turned violent.

“The offender informed the victim that he was under arrest. The complainant denied the allegations, and the offender then assaulted him,” the NPAZ stated in a bulletin released on 8 May 2025.

The officer allegedly struck the teacher on the buttocks with a baton stick and slapped him in the face with open hands, resulting in internal injuries.

The nature of the force used raised concerns, particularly as the victim, a teacher, was not resisting arrest.

Manjengwa was brought before the Chikombedzi Magistrates’ Court, where the 40-year-old officer was found guilty of ass@ult.

The court imposed a US$200 fine, with a default sentence of 90 days in prison should he fail to pay.

Furthermore, the magistrate handed down an additional four-month jail term, which was wholly suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that time frame.
