Zimbabwean Killed in Russia–Ukraine War Identified – A Zimbabwean national, Mandla Ncube, has been identified as one of the individuals killed in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.

Reports indicate that Ncube was recruited by an agent based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, before being deployed to fight on the Russian side of the conflict. His widow is believed to be residing in South Africa.

Investigative journalist Zenzele Ndebele, speaking while reporting for Newsroom Africa, revealed that several Zimbabweans were lured into the war under promises of lucrative monthly salaries ranging between US$2,000 and US$2,500.

“Several Zimbabweans were drawn into the conflict with promises of high salaries,” Ndebele said, adding that at least three Zimbabweans have died in the war so far.

Further reports state that Ncube was part of a group of Zimbabweans who joined the Russian military and were deployed to the Donbas region, an area that has experienced intense fighting, heavy gunfire, and sustained military confrontations.

Ncube’s death leaves behind his wife, who reportedly works as a vendor at Masabatha Crèche, now facing life without her husband.

While the exact number of Zimbabweans involved in the conflict remains unclear, estimates suggest that up to 10 nationals may currently be fighting in Ukraine.
