Zimbabwe Gems Aim for Bronze After Semi-Final Defeat by South Africa

The Zimbabwe national netball team, the Gems, are poised for a crucial match against hosts Malawi today, aiming to secure a bronze medal at the ongoing African Championships in Lilongwe, Malawi.

This comes after a disappointing semi-final loss to South Africa, where they were defeated 84-32, effectively ending their title aspirations.

The semi-final match was a challenging affair from the very beginning, with South Africa quickly establishing a 5-1 lead within the first five minutes.

The Gems struggled to gain momentum, finding themselves pinned back in their own half and unable to effectively handle South Africa’s relentless pressure.

Head coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki expressed his disappointment following the loss, citing South Africa’s strength as a formidable opponent.

“It was a tough one for us. South Africa are a powerhouse, and rebuilding like this makes every match challenging,” he said.

Mutsauki emphasized the team’s focus on long-term goals, particularly preparing for the 2027 World Cup.

“Our aim is to build a team that’s going to qualify; we’re not solely focused on these results.”

Under Mutsauki’s guidance, the team is in a period of rebuilding, featuring a mix of emerging talent and seasoned players like Sharon Bwanali and Claris Kwaramba.

However, the Gems struggled to adapt during the match, failing to protect their center passes and committing numerous unforced errors, which South Africa capitalized on to extend their lead.

Despite making tactical adjustments in the second half, Zimbabwe could not halt the South African advance.

Gaps developed across the court, allowing South Africa to widen their margin and secure their place in the final.

“This was the most competitive match we’ve played, and despite the scoreline, there were crucial lessons to learn,” Mutsauki reflected.

He noted that the players showed resilience under pressure and largely followed game plans, which he sees as a positive takeaway.

“Our defense needs to improve on cutting off the supply to South Africa’s shooters, as every pass into the shooting circle is likely to result in a goal.”

Looking ahead, the Gems are determined to bounce back against Malawi, knowing that a win will earn them the bronze medal and end the tournament on a high note.

Meanwhile, the final will see South Africa face Uganda, both teams being among the top six ranked nations in world netball and having already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

In the men’s championship, Zimbabwe’s Golden Flyers have advanced to the final and will also compete against South Africa on Sunday for a chance at continental success.
