Zambian Woman Allegedly Returns from the Dead After Five Years
In a startling incident reminiscent of the biblical Lazarus, 21-year-old Felopa Mbewe has reportedly returned to life five years after her burial.
Felopa, who was believed to have died at the age of 16 in 2019, has left her community and local authorities bewildered.
Felopa, a resident of Chiwete village under Chief Chinunda, allegedly died after ingesting a poisonous tablet during a dispute with her mother. In the absence of a proper mortuary, her family buried her the day after her death.
The funeral was marked by unusual occurrences, including a fierce whirlwind that disrupted the service, scattering mourners, as noted by Eastern Province police commander Robertson Mweemba.
After the burial, Felopa’s family noticed a series of strange events, including food mysteriously disappearing from their home.
Concerned, they sought spiritual guidance from Pastor Rueben Kalima, who performed prayers and fasting. He eventually suggested that Felopa might still be alive, although this claim went unverified for years.
The situation escalated last month when Felopa’s father, Mona Mbewe, 62, was shocked to hear from a cousin that she had been seen near the Zambia-Malawi border.
Eager to confirm this, Mbewe and his son embarked on a journey to locate her. To their astonishment, they found Felopa alive, though she was unable to speak.
Upon returning her to their village, the family’s incredible story caught the attention of local police. Commander Mweemba confirmed that officers interviewed both parents, and their accounts were consistent.
Authorities have since referred the case to a state pathologist, who will examine the burial site to determine if Felopa is indeed the girl who was buried five years ago.
“This will provide a final resolution to our inquiry,” Mweemba stated.
