Woman Gives Birth to Gigantic Baby Weighing 13 Pounds
An American mom, Shelby Martin, has made headlines after giving birth to one of the largest babies in years.
In July, the 30-year-old welcomed her 13-pound son, Cassian. Shelby had hoped for a vaginal delivery, valuing immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth.
However, due to Cassian’s size, doctors recommended a C-section to avoid risks during delivery.
“There was a real risk he could get stuck during delivery. That changed everything,” Shelby explained. “I knew the safest choice was a C-section, and thankfully, I had an amazing OBGYN and care team at TriStar Centennial who I trusted completely.”
Shelby, who already has three children, was aware that her fourth child would be larger than average. “We had a heads up that he was going to be big, but I would have never guessed almost 13 pounds,” she reflected. Looking back at bump pictures, she acknowledged she probably should have expected it.
In a candid interview with the People, Shelby admitted that she “didn’t think she would survive” her pregnancy, revealing that Cassian was “essentially popping my hip joint out of socket,” according to her physical therapist.
The delivery room was filled with astonishment when Cassian was born. “As soon as they pulled him out, everyone in the operating room collectively gasped,” she recounted.
“They were absolutely shocked at his size.”
Cassian spent 10 days in the neonatal intensive care unit due to glucose issues but was eventually discharged to go home with his parents.
Shelby shared that Cassian’s birth holds profound meaning for her and her husband, Joshua, as it came roughly one year after she suffered a miscarriage.
“He truly is the brightest rainbow we had been dreaming of,” Shelby said. “Of course, we still mourn our angel we lost, but being able to get him Earthside has filled something in all of us. His brothers are over the moon.”
