Billboard hosted its inaugural R&B No. 1’s event at The Box in New York City, honoring top artists shaping the future of R&B and hip-hop. Among the honorees were Usher, Victoria Monet, Lucky Daye, Luther Vandross, and South Africa’s rising star Tyla.
Tyla received the ‘Global Force’ award for her hit song “Water,” which has dominated charts, spending 46 weeks on the US Afrobeat chart and eight weeks atop mainstream R&B airplay. Her breakthrough came with her debut hit “Been Thinking,” but it was “Water” that propelled her to global fame.
Heran Mamo, a Billboard writer for R&B and afrobeats, presented the award, praising Tyla’s “papiano” sound—a fusion of pop and amapiano. Mamo highlighted Tyla’s international performances and achievements, including her Grammy win for Best African Music Performance.
Tyla, visibly moved, reflected on her journey, saying, “Coming from where I’m from, this felt impossible. It’s amazing to see people embracing different cultures and music styles. This isn’t just a trend, it’s our culture.”
Despite being new to the scene, Tyla’s influence is undeniable. She’s crafted a fresh genre that’s gaining global traction and has become the youngest South African Grammy winner. Her performances continue to wow audiences worldwide, even as she bounces back from postponing her first world tour.
