Two Weeks After Release, Amnesty Beneficiary Arrested for Stealing a Car

A 20-year-old man from Ruwa has been arrested for stealing a motor vehicle in Kwekwe just two weeks after his release from Marondera Prison on amnesty.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the theft happened on March 11 in Redcliff.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is informing the general public about the arrest of a suspect for unlawful entry into premises and theft of a motor vehicle. The suspect was arrested at Murombedzi Business Centre on March 16 at around 4 pm,” he said.

Inspector Mahoko named the suspect as Benjamin Manyangadze, 20, of Ruwa. Manyangadze had been released from Marondera Prison on March 2, where he had been serving time for six counts of unlawful entry and theft.

“The offence was committed on March 11 at around 5 pm in Redcliff. The complainant, Tawanda Godfrey Magure, had his house broken into while he was away,” Inspector Mahoko said.

Stolen from the house were the keys to a Peugeot, US$1,800 in cash, a Techno cellphone and other items. The thief then took the Peugeot, which was parked in the yard.

On March 16, detectives spotted the stolen car on the Chinhoyi–Chegutu road.

Police in Murombedzi helped intercept the vehicle at Murombedzi Business Centre, and Manyangadze was arrested.

The stolen car and the Techno cellphone were recovered, the Herald reports.

Inspector Mahoko said the total value of items stolen was US$9,920, while the recovered car and phone are worth US$7,500.
