Two 11-Year-Old Girls Drown in Disused Pit in Bulawayo

The community of Pumula North, Bulawayo is grieving after two 11-year-old girls drowned while swimming in a disused pit on Sunday afternoon.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the tragic incident, which took place at around 3 PM on February 8, 2026. The girls were swimming with friends when they got into trouble, ZBC reports.

Inspector Msebele Nomalanga from the Bulawayo ZRP reported that a 15-year-old boy, who was swimming nearby, heard cries for help and hurried to the pit.

He and a friend managed to recover the girls’ bodies and notified the police.

Inspector Nomalanga urged parents to monitor their children closely and to discourage them from playing near water bodies or abandoned pits to prevent such incidents.

She emphasized the need for communities to work together to keep children safe from dangerous areas.

“Parents and guardians should always keep a close eye on their children and warn them against swimming in risky areas,” she said.

“Communities must also take action to stop children from swimming in these hazardous locations.”

Additionally, she advised the public to avoid crossing flooded streams and rivers, especially with more rain expected.
