Tragic End For The Olympian
Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after her ex-boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her on fire, according to Ugandan officials.
The 33-year-old marathoner, who competed in Paris, suffered severe burns from the Sunday attack and could not recover.
Cheptegei, who trained in north-west Kenya, was attacked after returning home from church. Authorities report a dispute over land between her and her ex-partner may have led to the assault. Police are investigating the case.
Her death adds to growing concern over rising violence against female athletes in Kenya. Recent cases, including the murders of athletes Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua, also involved partners as prime suspects.
Uganda’s athletics federation expressed deep sorrow, stating: “We mourn the loss of Rebecca Cheptegei, who fell victim to domestic violence. We condemn such acts and demand justice. May she rest in peace.”
Cheptegei’s family has yet to confirm her passing, but Dr. Owen Menach of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed she died after her organs failed. Her ex-boyfriend is also hospitalized with less severe burns.
Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, called for justice, saying, “I’ve never seen such cruelty in my life.”
Cheptegei’s death follows the murders of Tirop and Mutua, whose partners remain the main suspects. Tirop’s husband faces murder charges, while police are still searching for Mutua’s boyfriend.
