Tinubu’s ‘Better Than Kenya’ Remark Triggers Backlash as Ruto Mocks Nigerian Accent
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has stirred controversy after saying Nigerians should be grateful because they are “better off” than Kenya despite the ongoing fuel crisis.
Speaking on the economic strain, Tinubu admitted fuel prices are “biting hard” but urged citizens to “thank God” their situation is not as severe as in Kenya and other African countries.
Days later, Kenya’s President William Ruto also came under fire after mocking Nigerian-accented English. While addressing Kenyans in Italy, Ruto claimed Nigerians are difficult to understand and “need a translator,” adding that Kenyans speak some of the best English globally.
His comments sparked backlash online, with many accusing him of disrespecting Nigerians and fuelling unnecessary divisions among African nations.
