“Stupid” Insult sparks outrage : Chief Nyamaropa accused of Misconduct_
HARARE – Chief Nyamaropa, born Munyaradze Tivange, the traditional leader of the Nyamaropa clan, is facing accusations of violating his subjects’ right to dignity after a viral video emerged showing him insulting a woman in his court.
The video, which has been widely shared on social media platforms, shows Chief Nyamaropa calling the woman “stupid” and ordering her to remove her spectacles during a court session.
Harare resident Pritchard Tafadzwa Paradzayi has hired lawyers to demand an investigation into Chief Nyamaropa’s conduct. In a letter of demand, Paradzayi seeks the intervention of the president of the National Council of Chiefs.
“The actions of Chief Nyamaropa are a stark reminder that the rights of women are still not being taken seriously in some of our traditional courts,” Paradzayi’s lawyer, Obey Shava of Shava Law Chambers, said.
Shava further stated that Chief Nyamaropa’s behavior was “unacceptable and unconstitutional,” adding that “it perpetuates a culture of disrespect and discrimination against women.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for Chief Nyamaropa’s removal. Paradzayi’s lawyers claim that this incident is a clear contravention of Section 56 of the Zimbabwean Constitution, which guarantees equal protection of the law and freedom from discrimination.
The National Council of Chiefs has been asked to investigate Chief Nyamaropa’s conduct in the discharge of his judicial duties.
