The driver, identified as 51-year-old Washington Timburwa from ZNA’s Two Brigade in Cranborne, Harare, was driving a private Nissan Primera. According to a police memo, the vehicle swerved off the road at the 90-kilometer peg, striking the girls and overturning multiple times before landing on its roof.
Three of the victims—Nokutenda Mabheka (14), Rachel Sinodia (13), and Chipo Chikanda (13)—died at the scene, while two others, Misiyose Benjamin (14) and Makanaka (details unknown), succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Bindura Hospital. The sixth girl, Manhenga, sustained critical injuries, including a fractured leg and head trauma, and is currently hospitalized.
The vehicle’s passenger, 22-year-old Nyasha Ngwerume, suffered a head injury but is in stable condition. Remarkably, Timburwa did not sustain visible injuries.
Authorities have attributed the accident to speeding and charged Timburwa with culpable homicide. The heavily damaged vehicle was towed to Bindura VID for inspection.
Though road accidents claim five lives a day in Zimbabwe, incidents involving vehicles plowing into pedestrians on the roadside are rare, police noted.
