Southgate Steps Down
England Manager Resigns After Euro 2024 Final Defeat
Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager just two days after their 2-1 loss to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final in Berlin. This marks England’s second consecutive Euro final defeat, following their penalty shootout loss to Italy three years ago at Wembley.
Southgate, 53, managed the national team for 102 games over eight years, with his contract due to expire later this year. He expressed pride in his tenure, stating, “It has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.”
The Football Association has begun the process of appointing Southgate’s successor, aiming for a swift confirmation ahead of England’s upcoming Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.
Under Southgate’s leadership, England achieved notable success, including a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and a quarter-final in 2022, significantly improving their performance in major tournaments compared to previous decades.
Despite facing criticism and pressure during Euro 2024, Southgate leaves a legacy of progress and optimism for England’s future in international football.
