Snake Bite Cases Surge Across Zimbabwe, Raising Public Health Alarm

Zimbabwe has seen a sharp rise in snake bite cases this year, with 1,686 incidents and six deaths reported, as outlined in the Ministry of Health’s situational report earlier this week.

This week alone, updates shared via the Ministry of Health’s Twitter handle (@MoHCCZim) noted 147 new snake bite cases, including two fatalities – one in Bindura District and another in Chegutu District.

The report highlights increasing dangers as snake activity intensifies during the rainy season, affecting communities nationwide.

Snake bites are frequent in agricultural9 and rural areas, especially during activities such as farming or walking through bushy terrain.

The Ministry of Health is actively working to raise awareness about snake safety and expand access to antivenom treatment in high-risk zones. Immediate medical intervention after a bite remains crucial to minimize severe complications or fatalities.

Health experts are encouraging the public to take precautions, such as wearing protective clothing, avoiding snake-prone areas, and seeking prompt medical care after a bite.

Authorities are urging communities and healthcare providers to remain vigilant, with snake bite cases expected to increase further as the rainy season progresses.
