SmartSuite or SmartTrap? Zimbabweans Slam Econet’s New Data Plans

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has launched its new SmartSuite data packages, officially replacing the widely used SmartBiz bundle.
The company claims the Fixed Wireless Access plans offer tailored solutions for individuals, families, and businesses.
But the rollout has triggered public outrage, with many Zimbabweans accusing Econet of raising prices and limiting access while branding it as an upgrade.
SmartSuite offers six tiered plans, from SmartLite (50GB) for light users to SmartPro (800GB) for SMEs.
Mid-range options include SmartPlus (75GB), SmartMax (100GB), SmartFlex (200GB), and SmartUltra (400GB).
While Econet touts these packages as more flexible and performance-driven, many users say they’re a downgrade from the previous SmartBiz plan, which provided 1TB of capped unlimited data for just US$45.
According to iHarare, Econet notified SmartBiz customers last month about the transition, promising a smooth migration.
“Customers registered to the old SmartBiz service and who already have a CPE (customer premises equipment), can simply dial *143, choose a package of their choice and credit their new SmartSuite package,” the company said.
New subscribers must purchase a SmartSuite SIM and compatible CPE router, although existing CPEs may still be used if they meet Econet’s specifications.
A key feature of SmartSuite is geo-locking, which restricts data usage to the customer’s registered location via the CPE router.
Econet insists this is a benefit, not a limitation. “This approach ensures customers get the best possible usage experience while enabling service providers to ringfence critical resources,” the company said, citing bandwidth optimization.
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly negative.
On social media, users expressed frustration over pricing and restrictions.
@Nkosilathi Thembelami Mbele wrote, “Does Econet Zimbabwe have a beef with money? I can tell you for a fact that in my community people are coming together to buy Starlink kits. As I speak, I am paying 10 bucks for unlimited WiFi, with my whole family and friends connected.”
Other users echoed similar sentiments.
@George Papaya posted, “Haa apa matigura kunorira. We were faithfully supporting you but these data prices are unreasonable and the change is just too much.”
@Robert Baba Malala Masvaure added, “You guys are thieves.”
SmartSuite packages are now available at Econet shops nationwide.
While the company maintains that the changes are designed to improve service delivery, many customers say the pricing model is exclusionary and out of touch with the economic realities facing ordinary Zimbabweans.
