Sinach Faces 5 Billion Naira Lawsuit Over “Way Maker”
Award-winning gospel singer Sinach is being sued for 5 billion Naira by music producer Michael Oluwole, known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement related to her hit song “Way Maker.” The court case was set to begin on November 27, 2024.
In the lawsuit, Maye claims he is both the author and co-owner of “Way Maker.” He is seeking 5 billion Naira in damages for the alleged infringement of his rights.
Maye wants the court to order that any money made from licensing or copyright of “Way Maker” be split equally between him and Sinach, as there is no written agreement between them.
Maye’s demands include:
1. A fair division of licensing fees.
2. Disclosure of all licenses and copyright assignments related to “Way Maker.”
3. A declaration that Sinach did not formalize his contributions in writing.
4. An affirmation that his performer’s rights were violated.
5. An injunction to stop Sinach from reproducing, distributing, or performing “Way Maker” or its adaptations.
Maye claims he worked as a studio engineer on “Way Maker,” contributing to its recording and mixing, and creating instrumental parts. He argues that these contributions were made without transferring his performer’s rights.
In response, Sinach, through her lawyer, denies the allegations. She states that she was already well-known before the song’s release and claims sole authorship, stating that the song was created with other artists before Maye’s involvement.
“Way Maker” has gained worldwide fame, becoming the first Nigerian gospel song to surpass 100 million views on YouTube by March 2019.
The song has won multiple awards and has been covered by many artists. The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for copyright rights in Nigeria’s music industry.
