Shurugwi Man Survives Brutal Axe Attack After Confronting Gold Miners

A Shurugwi man, Tafadzwa Siyabonga (35), barely escaped with his life after a vicious attack by artisanal gold miners last Saturday.

Siyabonga confronted the miners over the dangerous open pits they left behind, which threaten the safety of livestock and residents in the area. The confrontation quickly turned violent at Chiundura Claim in Musasa, Shurugwi, around 6 a.m.

Siyabonga and his wife confronted Alphonse Rushava (36), one of the miners, leading to a heated argument. In the heat of the moment, Siyabonga struck Rushava on the leg with an axe. Rushava’s accomplices retaliated brutally, hitting Siyabonga on the head with an axe and smashing his legs with an iron bar.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and called on the public to avoid violence when settling disputes. “We urge the community to resolve differences peacefully to prevent unnecessary injuries and deaths,” Mahoko said. Police are still investigating the attack.
