Satellite vs. Skeptics: Starlink Revolutionizes Healthcare at 19 Uzumba Clinics

Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe District has entered what officials are calling a “new era of healthcare delivery” following the installation of Starlink satellite internet at all 19 local health facilities, including Maramba Clinic.

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana announced the development on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that the rollout was made possible through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC) and the Zvataida Rural District Council.

“Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe District has entered a new era of healthcare delivery with the installation of Starlink satellite internet across all 19 health facilities, including Maramba Clinic.

“This achievement was made possible through a strategic partnership between MOHCC-UMP District and Zvataida RDC,” Mangwana posted.

The high-speed satellite connection is expected to revolutionize healthcare services in the district by enabling telemedicine consultations, improving digital data systems, and expanding access to specialist care.

“With reliable high-speed connectivity now in place, clinics can facilitate telemedicine consultations, enhance data management, and improve access to specialist care,” Mangwana added.

However, the announcement sparked mixed reactions across social media.

While many welcomed the move as a step toward modernizing rural healthcare, others questioned the choice of satellite technology over mobile or fibre networks.

@Sekuru Va Tity, commented:“ Telemedicine, someone just got a way to make money. Why isn’t there mobile or fibre connections already?”

Mangwana responded directly to the criticism, defending the use of low-earth orbit satellite internet: “What’s wrong with low earth orbit satellite based internet?”

Online reactions ranged from praise to scepticism, with some users mocking the timing of the announcement.

@Tabve Mvuma WeNew Castle wrote:“ ‘New era of healthcare delivery’… aren’t you ashamed to say that in 2025, Nick?”

@SAMANYANGA joked: “UZ ine Wi-Fi???” — referencing the University of Zimbabwe’s own connectivity challenges.

Amid the debate, some users expressed confusion about the concept of telemedicine itself.

@TinasheTal2489, known as The Gas Guru, asked: “What really is telemedicine, Sir?”

Despite the divided opinions, the Starlink deployment marks a significant milestone in bridging Zimbabwe’s rural healthcare divide.
