Mohamed Salah has come under fire from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for publicly expressing disappointment over the club’s failure to offer him a new contract.
Salah, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, remarked after Liverpool’s recent win against Southampton that he feels “probably more out than in” regarding his future with the team.
The 32-year-old forward is Liverpool’s top scorer this season, having netted 12 goals in all competitions, including two crucial goals against Southampton, which helped the club maintain an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, expressed his disappointment with Salah’s comments, especially with significant matches against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City approaching.
He stated, “If he keeps putting out statements and his agent shares cryptic messages, that is selfish. It shows a focus on personal interests rather than the club’s needs.”
While Liverpool has not officially commented on Salah’s remarks, a source told BBC Sport that communication between the club and Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, remains ongoing and positive.
Chris Sutton, during a segment on BBC Radio 5 Live, suggested that Salah’s decision to approach the media indicates a desire to stay at Anfield. “He actively sought out reporters to express his feelings, which suggests he wants to remain,” Sutton noted.
Rory Smith from The Athletic added that Salah’s comments signal to fans that he wishes to continue with the club. However, he cautioned that Salah’s age may complicate contract negotiations as Liverpool evaluates the long-term implications of a potential new deal.
As Salah navigates his future, the focus for Liverpool remains on their pursuit of the Premier League title.
