SA Sting Nabs Key Suspects in Daring USD4M Ecobank Heist

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two prime suspects behind the sensational USD4 million Ecobank robbery that rocked Bulawayo in October 2024.

Regarded as Zimbabwe’s biggest bank heist to date, the Ecobank robbery saw the gang escape with over US$4.4 million with investigations later revealing that the group, consisting of at least seven suspects, had also been linked to a string of violent crimes nationwide.

In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu were apprehended in South Africa on July 5, 2025.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu in connection with the USD4 million Bulawayo Ecobank robbery heist which occurred on 3rd October 2024,” said Nyathi.

Nyathi highlighted that legal processes to extradite the suspects back to Zimbabwe are already underway.

“The due processes of the law are now taking effect for the suspects’ extradition to Zimbabwe,” he added.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still pursuing the arrest of the other suspects who are linked to this case,” Nyathi said.

He further emphasized the force’s unwavering commitment to bringing fugitives to justice, regardless of where they attempt to hide.

“Comprehensive efforts to arrest all suspects who are committing criminal acts in the country and escape to neighbouring countries will be religiously pursued for the law to take its course without fear or favour.

“We also urge the media to be cautious and patient in reporting events relating to the Ecobank robbery as leads on the suspects and their activities unfold. More details in relation to this case will be released in due course,” he said.
