SA Prison Escape Plan Gone Wrong For Two Zim Inmates

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has applauded its officials for a job well done after foiling an escape operation by two inmates at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison.

The two tried to escape on Wednesday, 18 January 2023, reportedly.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, Emmanuel Muchandizwa serving 17 years for being in the country illegally and robbery; and Thembani Mudau who is doing 14 years for robbery and housebreaking, had managed to cut open some window grills using hacksaw blades.

Prison officials and prisoners clashed at the Boksburg prison earlier this year.

DCS officials were reportedly testing and inspecting the grills when they discovered that the structure had been tampered with and a search was conducted where six (6) blades were then located.

The two offenders indicated that they acquired the blades through the visit planted in the sneakers from outside. Both offenders are Zimbabwean nationals who were only sentenced in 2022, June and July, respectively.

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale is expected to visit Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre on Wednesday at 11:00 and inspect the damage caused by the two inmates.
