Residents Hold Prayer Vigil After Newborn Found Dumped in Street

Shock and sorrow in Cape Town. Community rallies for prayer vigil after newborn found abandoned in street. Residents of KTC in Gugulethu, Cape Town, rallied together on Sunday, July 28, for a prayer meeting following the grim discovery of a newborn baby dumped in the street on July 25.

The shocking incident, uncovered by cleaners on Nonzima Street, spurred the community, alongside pastors and police, to gather in a call for justice.

Mfundisi Asanda Ndzondzo voiced the community’s outrage, declaring, “We won’t stay silent while such tragedies occur in our area; this defies our laws and divine principles.”

Ntombi Ntleki, 41, expressed her frustration over the ongoing issue of baby abandonment, lamenting that their neighborhood has become a dumping ground for infants, both living and dead. “We need more streetlights to deter these heartbreaking acts,” she demanded. Gogo Iris Nocwaka, 57, extended a heartfelt appeal, urging those in distress not to harm their babies but instead to leave them with her for safe transfer to authorities.

This tragic incident isn’t isolated; another child was found abandoned at a graveyard earlier this year. Ward Councillor Susan Zumana emphasized the importance of community solidarity to prevent further tragedies.

Melanie Luus from Inceba Projects highlighted the existence of baby savers, special drop-off points where mothers can leave their infants anonymously and safely.

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi reported that police are actively investigating the incident, with an inquest underway to uncover the full details.
