Relatives Told Granny Was Dead at Mpilo Hospital —Only to Find Her Alive

Relatives Told Granny Was Dead at Mpilo Hospital —Only to Find Her Alive – A Bulawayo family is reeling from trauma after Mpilo Central Hospital mistakenly declared their grandmother dead—only for them to find her alive when they arrived to collect the body.
Tragically, she later died the same day.
According to H Metro, the family of Idah Mushongahande (79) told H-Metro that they had been awakened by a hospital call informing them of her death at 10:08 PM on 2 December.

Her granddaughter, Chantel Dube, described the ordeal:
“We were shocked and traumatised. Imagine going to collect a body only to find your grandmother alive. She had a strong pulse and did not look like she was dying. The nurses simply told us a mistake had been made, but they refused to explain.”
Dube added that the family had already contacted Nyaradzo Funeral Services and notified relatives travelling for the funeral.
While preparing to take the elderly woman for an INR scan, the family was informed—again—that she had passed away.
“The whole situation does not make sense. We want answers because this was unprofessional and traumatic,” Dube said.
Mpilo’s Clinical Director, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, promised a full investigation.
“We offer profound condolences to the family. Internal procedures have been instituted, and we are committed to ensuring the family receives all necessary support,” he said.
