Rabada’s Cricket Future Uncertain as Drug Test Sparks Suspension

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned recreational drug during the 2025 SA20 tournament.

The revelation explains his sudden return from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in April, where he had been playing for Gujarat Titans before citing “personal reasons” for his exit.

Rabada (29) was participating in the IPL when he abruptly returned to South Africa, prompting speculation about the real cause of his departure.

A statement from the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has now confirmed that he tested positive for a prohibited recreational substance during the SA20 tournament, leading to his withdrawal from the IPL and triggering his provisional suspension.

Addressing the matter, Rabada expressed deep remorse through a statement released via SACA.

He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and emphasized his respect for the privilege of representing South Africa.

He clarified that the substance in question was not a performance enhancer.

“I am deeply sorry to all those I have let down. Playing cricket is a privilege and I will never take it for granted. This privilege extends beyond my personal ambitions”,Rabada stated.

As reported by iHarare, Rabada is currently serving his suspension and remains hopeful for a return to professional cricket.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) also addressed the issue, reaffirming its strict stance against drug use while noting Rabada’s commitment to upholding professional standards.

“The incident is regrettable, but Rabada has assured CSA and his supporters that he is focused on maintaining the integrity of the game,” CSA said in a statement.

While his future remains uncertain, Rabada has expressed determination to make a comeback once the necessary procedures have been completed.
