Police Seek Help to Identify Hit-and-Run Victim in Chipinge Tragedy

Police in Manicaland are appealing for public assistance to identify a man who died after being struck by a car along the Birchenough Bridge–Mt Selinda Road last week.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said the unidentified victim, believed to be around 32 years old, died upon admission at Chipinge District Hospital after sustaining severe head injuries.

“The accident occurred on October 28, 2025, at around 6pm near Mukushwa Lodge, along the Birchenough Bridge–Mt Selinda Road.

“A silver Honda Fit, registration number AEV 1593, driven by a 33-year-old man, Garikai Gwedzi of Gaza ‘A’ location, Chipinge, was travelling north towards Tanganda Halt when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing the road,” said Ass Insp Chinyoka.

The victim was rushed to Chipinge District Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to H-Metro, police say the man’s body is still being held at Chipinge District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, and they are urging anyone with a missing male relative or friend matching the description to come forward and assist in identification.

Police officers from ZRP Chipinge Traffic attended the scene shortly after the crash.

“While investigations are ongoing, we urge both motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the evening when visibility is poor,” added Ass Insp Chinyoka.

“Pedestrians must cross only at safe points, while drivers should stay alert and adhere to speed limits.”
