Paying Housemaids, Gardeners Below US$90 Now Illegal in Zimbabwe; Employers Risk Two-Year Jail Term – The Government has approved new minimum wages for domestic workers, with the revised salary structure taking immediate effect.
Under the new regulations, employers who fail to comply with the prescribed minimum wages could face penalties, including fines and imprisonment of up to two years.
The approved minimum monthly wages are as follows:
• Yard Worker/Gardener – US$90
• Cook/Housekeeper – US$99
• Child, Disabled or Aged Minder – US$108
• Disabled or Aged Minder with a Red Cross Certificate – US$117
In addition, the minimum wage for workers in unclassified operations has been set at US$270 per month.

The new wage structure is aimed at improving the welfare of domestic workers and ensuring fair compensation for their services. Employers are expected to immediately adjust salaries to comply with the new regulations.
Authorities have warned that paying domestic workers below the stipulated minimum wages is now an offence and that those found violating the law risk prosecution, fines, or imprisonment.
The move has sparked debate among both employers and employees, with many welcoming the wage increases while others have raised concerns about the affordability of the new rates.
The revised wages take effect immediately, meaning all employers of domestic workers are required to comply with the new salary thresholds.
