Nyanga Nurse K!lls Lover in Brutal Att@ck Before Taking His Own Life

Nyanga Nurse K!lls Lover in Brutal Att@ck Before Taking His Own Life – Tensions remain high in Mutemararo Village, Nyanga, following the shocking murd£r-su!c!de involving 47-year-old Joseph Upenyu Mandiyamba, a married nurse, who k!lled his alleged ch£ating girlfriend, Privilege Garufu (34), before hanging himself.

The Murd€r and Su¡c¡de Scene

According to Manica Post, Mandiyamba’s body was discovered hanging from a Muzhanje tree in a neighbor’s garden, his clothes stained with blood.

Meanwhile, Garufu’s lifeless body lay in her bedroom with an adze (mbezo) still lodged in her right eye. It was her son who made the gruesome discovery, while Mandiyamba’s body was found by neighbors.

According to National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, investigations confirmed that the crime was motivated by jealousy after Mandiyamba learned that Garufu was secretly dating a man she had introduced to him as her uncle. The situation was worsened by the fact that the new lover had moved into the house Mandiyamba had built for Garufu.

The Betrayal That Led to Tragedy

Mandiyamba had invested heavily in his relationship with Garufu, building her a five-roomed mansion with a modern kitchen, while his own wife and three children remained in a dilapidated two-roomed house. He had even opened a shop for Garufu, neglecting his family despite his wife’s sacrifices to support his education.

According to his aunt, Mrs. Barbara Mandiyamba-Saunyama, the nurse had abandoned his wife because Garufu had promised to bear him a son, something his wife had supposedly failed to do. Ironically, Garufu never gave him a child, and now both were dead.

The final betrayal came when Mandiyamba learned from one of Garufu’s friends that the “uncle” he had been entertaining and buying beer for was, in fact, her lover. Enraged, he confronted Garufu at a bar, leading to a heated argument. That night, after she returned home with the soldier, Mandiyamba attacked her in a jealous rage before taking his own life.

Financial Struggles and Suspicions

Before the tragedy, Mandiyamba had taken US$200 from his wife—money meant for their child’s school fees. He and Garufu traveled to Mutare to collect his salary, which they spent recklessly. When his belongings were collected after his death, only a single dollar remained in his wallet. His relatives believe this financial loss, coupled with his realization that he had been deceived, pushed him over the edge.

His nephew, Mr. Shingirayi Nyakapanga, revealed that the family had visited Garufu’s home to “collect” Mandiyamba’s spirit, which was said to be lingering in the neighbor’s garden. They were shocked to see the lavish house he had built for her, complete with an en-suite and matching green aluminum roofing, while his own family lived in poverty.

Controversial Funeral Chaos

Garufu’s funeral in Sabvukutwa Village descended into chaos as a group of sex workers from Nyanga town—her friends—disrupted the proceedings. They staged a provocative display, blowing up condoms, dancing suggestively, and even undressing in front of elderly mourners. In a shocking turn, one of them threw her underwear into the grave, only to demand it back before the grave was fully covered.

A neighbor, Mrs. Eulita Chifamata, revealed that she had previously counseled Mandiyamba after he threatened to take his own life, claiming Garufu had infected him with HIV. The couple was scheduled for testing the following week, but tragedy struck before that could happen.

Mysteries Surrounding Garufu’s Death

While many believed Mandiyamba acted out of rage, some of Garufu’s acquaintances found it puzzling that she did not fight back. According to her former classmate, John Jatiwero, she was known to be physically aggressive. However, after seeing her lifeless body, they questioned whether she had been intoxicated or if other factors were at play.

Garufu’s uncle refused to speak to the media, stating he would report on the matter himself through his YouTube channel. He also dismissed allegations about the disorderly funeral, insisting that reports of underwear being thrown into the grave were false.

Authorities and Community Reaction

Village head Sabvukutwa declined to comment, stating that all information had been handed over to the police. Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the shocking incident, which serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of betrayal and unchecked emotions.
