Nigerian Nutritionist Advises Edible Insects as Cost-Friendly Protein Alternative

Nigerian Nutritionist Advises Edible Insects as Cost-Friendly Protein Alternative – As meat and fish prices continue to rise in Nigeria, nutrition experts are urging citizens to consider more affordable protein alternatives, including edible insects and traditional plant-based options.

Professor Wasiu Afolabi, former President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, emphasized the nutritional benefits of unconventional protein sources such as soybeans, snails, mushrooms, and insects like crickets and termites.

He noted that while these foods were once common, modern dietary shifts—especially among the younger generation—have led to their decline.

“Mushrooms, soybeans, and even toads in some communities are rich in protein and fiber,” Afolabi stated. “We must revive traditional foods that are cost-effective and nutritionally valuable.”

He also recommended the use of fermented locust beans, lentils, and ground crayfish as substitutes for meat in soups and stews.

Professor Ignatius Onimawo, Vice-Chancellor of Ave Maria University, Abuja, echoed the call for nutritional education.

He stressed that with proper knowledge, families can still meet dietary needs without depending on costly animal proteins.

“Protein is essential, but it doesn’t always have to come from meat. Plant-based proteins can support good health when properly combined and prepared,” Onimawo added.
