New Law: Only 30+ Can Drive Public Transport Vehicles in Zimbabwe

In a bold move to curb road accidents, Zimbabwe has raised the minimum age for public transport drivers to 30. The new law, under the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, also requires five years’ driving experience.

The changes follow a surge in accidents linked to young and inexperienced drivers, with some as young as 17 behind the wheel. However, drivers aged 25-30 already licensed can continue operating.

The move has been widely praised as long overdue, with many Zimbabweans welcoming the stricter regulations. However, concerns remain over whether law enforcement agencies will effectively implement and uphold the new rules.
