Nadia Nakai Struggling To Cope After AKA’s Death: ‘This Pain Is Just Too Much To Bear’

Nadia Nakai has opened up about how she is struggling to come to terms with the death of her rapper boyfriend, AKA.

Kiernan Forbes was shot and killed outside a popular Durban restaurant on Friday, 10 February. Following his death, the rapper was honoured with a public memorial and buried in a private funeral.

His family have since released the album, Mass Country, which he recorded shortly before his death.

“This pain is just too much to bear,” Nakai wrote alongside a video collage of herself and AKA. “Everyone says it’s something I will learn to live with. I just don’t believe it. Every day it just gets worse. I don’t know how to deal with this.”

“Saying it hurts doesn’t explain the level of this pain. This hole in my heart will never be filled. People go through heartache and are held together through their grief by their partner. How do I deal with the grief of losing my partner? The person that was supposed to support me is who I’ve lost. God, I miss you, Kiernan.”

The video includes footage of the couple’s first and last public interview together, an insert they filmed for The Insider SA.

During the episode, which aired days after AKA’s death, the couple spoke candidly about their first date, who was more romantic and the significance of their matching tattoos.

In a recent tribute on social media, AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes, thanked Nakai for how she loved and respected her son.

She wrote: “You showed him what real love and respect is, and you brought out the absolute best in him. Kiernan was born with love, raised in love, gave love to so many, and all he wanted in return was to be loved and respected in the same way. You gave that to him, and he died surrounded by love.”
