Mother of Two-Month-Old Twins Appeals for Assistance After Severe Burn Injuries – A Chitungwiza woman who suffered serious burn injuries in a cooking accident is appealing for assistance with medical expenses and infant formula for her two-month-old twins.
Tracy Kaviya, of Manyame Park, is currently receiving treatment at Chitungwiza Central Hospital after sustaining severe burns on July 1.
Recounting the incident, Kaviya said her Grade Five child had placed a pot of cooking oil on a gas stove in preparation for making chips to take to school.
“On July 1, my Grade Five child put a pot of oil on the gas stove to prepare chips for school. After placing the pot on the stove, he became distracted while looking at new items on his recently acquired mobile phone. At that time, I was in my bedroom breastfeeding my twins when I noticed a strong smell of burning oil,” she said.
She said she rushed to the kitchen after putting the babies down and found the oil engulfed in flames.

“I immediately grabbed the pot to remove it from the stove, but the flames suddenly flared up and spread to the dress I was wearing, causing it to catch fire. I quickly removed the dress, but I then slipped on oil that had spilled onto the floor and sustained severe burns on both legs up to my thighs,” she said.
Kaviya was initially taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital before being transferred to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for further treatment.
“The doctors say my burns are between 15 and 20 degrees in severity, and I am in a lot of pain. The challenge is that I have two-month-old twins, a boy and a girl, who still need breastfeeding. Since I am in hospital, they remain at home and are only brought here in the mornings and afternoons to feed. At night they require infant formula, which has become difficult to afford,” she said.
She expressed gratitude to the Twins Association of Zimbabwe, which has pledged to assist with infant formula.
