Moroccan Doctor Develops World’s First Device to Filter Blood Inside Blood Vessels – Moroccan neurologist Dr. Youssef El Azouzi has unveiled a groundbreaking medical innovation — the world’s first device capable of filtering blood from within blood vessels.

This revolutionary development promises to significantly improve outcomes for patients with immune deficiencies, chronic infections, and those undergoing organ transplants.

In a detailed post on Facebook, Dr. El Azouzi described the device as a game-changer in critical care.

“It will contribute to treating tens of millions of people suffering from immune deficiencies and chronic infections in intensive care units, where antibiotics are often ineffective,” he wrote.

“It will also help reduce the risk of new organ rejection during transplants.”

The device functions by redirecting inflammatory cells and specific white blood cells away from vital blood vessels — particularly those nourishing newly transplanted organs — thus preventing immune-related complications.

In essence, it allows for real-time control over the immune cells’ movement from inside the vessel itself, something never achieved before.

The invention was successfully tested on a 75-kilogram pig in an advanced laboratory in the United States.

Scientists induced inflammation in both thighs of the animal, then used the device to guide immune cells to only one side.

The results confirmed the device’s ability to selectively control inflammation without harming the subject.

“This is the first device that controls cell direction from within the vessel itself,” Dr. El Azouzi said in a video documenting his journey to the U.S. to register the invention. “It opens the door to unprecedented possibilities in treating inflammatory diseases and organ rejection.”

The project has so far cost around $250,000 as of March 2025 — a sum entirely funded by private donors, without assistance from any public institutions or organizations.

Dr. El Azouzi acknowledged the contributions of supporters who believed in the vision, adding that the project was the result of three years of relentless research, design, and manufacturing.

Dr. El Azouzi is no stranger to the world of cutting-edge medical inventions. In 2019, he was named the Best Inventor in the Arab World during the 11th season of Qatar’s Stars of Science for his invention of a blood flow-regulating stent for heart patients.

Born in 1991, El Azouzi studied at the American School of Rabat before attending Oxford University, Boston University, and later completing his medical studies in English at universities in Turkey.

He is the son of renowned Moroccan neurosurgeon Dr. Mustapha El Azouzi.

Today, he serves as CEO of Aorto Medical Company in the United States, where his team continues to pioneer advancements in vascular and immune-related medical technologies.
