Messi’s Thor & Wakanda-Themed Goal Celebrations For Inter Miami Raise Eyebrows

Soccer fans on social media have speculated that Lionel Messi could be being paid for his superhero-themed goal celebrations.

The Argentine superstar has scored five goals in just three games for David Beckham’s Inter Miami with his latest coming Wednesday night in a Leagues Cup triumph over Orlando City.

The 36-year-old bagged a brace in the 3-1 victory and celebrated one by breaking out the Wakanda Forever move.

He crossed his arms over his chest, which is inspired by the Marvel movie Black Panther.

It was the second Marvel superhero-themed celebration from the World Cup winner since his arrival in South Beach.

Messi made headlines last week with his celebration after bagging a brace against Atlanta in a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Fans initially speculated that his cupped-hand-like gesture was a ‘hold my beer’ reference aimed at franchise chief David Beckham, but it appears that wasn’t the case as his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, shared the real meaning behind the move.

Roccuzzo shared an imagine of the celebration on her Instagram story to her 36.2million followers, accompanied by a Thor gif, suggesting Messi was actually referencing the Marvel character.

The two references to characters from the Disney-owned comic book giant have had soccer fans speculating there is a motive to Messi’s actions.

Some supporters are speculating that Messi’s celebrations could be linked to MLS’s partnership with Marvel and adidas.

The American league entered into a partnership with Marvel in June.

At the MLS All-Stars game against Arsenal last month, a Marvel-themed soccer ball was debuted and is currently on sale for $170.

The sportswear brand also released Avengers-inspired warm-up jacket and pants for the All-Stars game with the clothing available for sale on the MLS store as part of the League and Continental Tire’s efforts to raise awareness and funds during Kick Childhood Cancer Awareness month in September.

Furthermore, Messi is believed to have been offered a $60million-a-year contract by Inter Miami that includes new deals with adidas and Apple.

Adidas is also believed to be giving Messi a cut of merchandise sales, while Inter Miami is willing to give him an ownership stake when the 36-year-old eventually retires, according to multiple reports.
