Mourners at a wake in Peru were left in shock when a man declared dead by doctors suddenly began twitching inside his coffin.
The unexpected turn of events unfolded in the town of Olmos, in the Lambayeque region, where family and friends had gathered to pay their last respects to Iván.
Just days before his scheduled burial, the coffin started shaking and the presumed corpse appeared to regain consciousness.
A viral video of the incident, which was posted on TikTok, shows mourners reacting in disbelief.
Some witnesses called the event a miracle, comparing it to the biblical resurrection of Lazarus.
A woman in the footage exclaimed, “Glory to God! Just as He resurrected Lazarus, God can do so with this man.”
However, Peru has witnessed multiple alarming cases of mistaken death declarations, raising concerns about medical errors.
According to Mirror reports, a 24-year-old man, Franklin Mandujano Doroteo, was pronounced dead at a hospital and placed in a coffin in Tingo María.
Mourners soon realized he was still breathing, prompting an urgent rush back to the hospital. Yet, shortly after arrival, he was officially declared dead once more.
Similarly, Watson Franklin Mandujano Doroteo was mistakenly pronounced dead after receiving diazepam during a dental procedure.
At his wake, family members noticed his rib cage moving. A doctor confirmed he had vital signs and he was taken to the hospital—only to be declared dead again.
Medical experts suggest that catalepsy, a rare neurological condition that can cause temporary paralysis, rigidity and a dramatic slowdown in bodily functions, may be responsible for such mistaken death declarations.
Mirror reports indicate that cases of people seemingly “returning from the dead” have occurred worldwide, including a shocking incident in Argentina in 1902, when a young woman named Rufina Cambaceres was unknowingly buried alive after falling into a cataleptic state.
More recently, in April this year, paramedics rushed to a funeral home in Palma, Spain, when a “dead” woman began moving inside her coffin.
Last year, Texas teenager Sammy Berko was revived two hours after doctors abandoned efforts to resuscitate him following cardiac arrest.
While some view Iván’s case in Peru as a divine act, others insist science provides a logical explanation.
