Mutamba Orders Nationwide Security Sweep Ahead of Independence, Easter Celebrations
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a nationwide security blitz to curb lawlessness and safeguard citizens ahead of the upcoming Easter and Independence Day holidays, warning that there will be zero tolerance for rogue drivers, drug peddlers, and unlicensed operators.
With the twin national celebrations just days away, police commanders across the country have been ordered to tighten enforcement including roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and sweeping crime awareness campaigns targeting major crimes such as armed robbery, drug and substance abuse, rape, stock theft, and murder.
In a statement, police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba announced that unlicensed buses, pirate taxis, and unroadworthy vehicles will be barred from roads as part of a massive crackdown to prevent road carnage.
“No pirate taxi or bus without a permit will be allowed through police checkpoints. Officers will impound defective vehicles and arrest drivers caught under the influence of alcohol,” warned Mutamba in a stern statement.

The ZRP also confirmed that preparations for security at Independence celebrations scheduled at national, provincial, and district levels are now complete.
Citing rising drug abuse among the youth, especially during holidays, Mutamba urged parents to be vigilant over their children’s activities.
“Parents should properly monitor their children to curb cases of drug and substance abuse. Our blitz on drug suppliers, bases, and users will continue without let-up,” he added.
The Liquor Act will also be strictly enforced, with police promising to shut down all unlicensed bars and bottle stores.
Licensed outlets have been warned to adhere strictly to operating hours, while operators flouting the law will face arrest.
Businesses have also been advised to tighten internal security to avoid financial leaks and potential robbery attempts during the festive period.
“Companies are reminded not to share financial transaction details with every employee. The public must also avoid keeping or carrying large sums of money,” Mutamba cautioned.

Meanwhile, Commissioner General Mutamba called for unity, safety and vigilance as the country heads into the holiday period.
