Mali “Traditional Healer” Arrested After Failing to Deliver Promised AFCON Victory

Mali “Traditional Healer” Arrested After Failing to Deliver Promised AFCON Victory – Malian authorities have arrested a self-styled traditional healer, Mr Sinayogo, who allegedly defrauded football supporters of more than €33,000 after promising that spiritual rituals would secure Mali’s victory over Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to reports, Sinayogo, popularly known as a marabout, claimed he possessed supernatural powers capable of influencing football results.
He reportedly mobilised supporters through social media and word of mouth, urging them to contribute money towards rituals he said would guarantee Mali’s progression to the AFCON semi-finals.

In total, supporters are said to have contributed approximately €33,500. However, Mali’s campaign came to an abrupt end after a 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the quarter-finals, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring the decisive goal.
Following the loss, angry fans allegedly stormed Sinayogo’s residence, accusing him of deception. Police intervened to restore order and took the suspect into custody for his own protection.
Authorities have since confirmed that Sinayogo is being investigated on charges of fraud, deception and exploiting public belief in superstition. Prosecutors are expected to formally charge him as investigations continue.
