Lucky Dube Killed in Mistaken Identity Hijacking

The men who killed Lucky Dube said they did not know who he was until they saw news reports the next day.

Court evidence showed the attackers thought he was a Nigerian national and targeted him because he was driving a Chrysler 300C, which they wanted to hijack.

One of the killers, Sifiso Mhlanga, later said he shot Dube after panicking, believing the singer was reaching for a gun when he was actually reaching for his car keys.

Mhlanga, Mbuti Mabe, and Julius Gxowa were convicted and sentenced to life in prison in April 2009. The Johannesburg High Court found them guilty of murder and armed robbery linked to the 2007 killing.
