Lionel Messi Makes Stunning Announcement, Raises Questions About His Participation in 2026 World Cup: ‘If I’m Not Fit, I’d Rather Not be There…’

In a heartfelt farewell, Lionel Messi scored two goals as Argentina triumphed over Venezuela 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The match, attended by a sold-out crowd of 85,000 fans, marked Messi’s last home game with the national team, Aljazeera reports.

“Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of,” Messi said after the match, reflecting on his joy of playing in front of Argentine supporters. He added, “I’ve experienced a lot of things on this pitch, both good and not so good, but it’s always a joy to play in Argentina, in front of our fans.”

Messi scored in the 39th and 80th minutes, with Lautaro Martinez contributing a goal in the 76th minute. With this performance, Messi has reached 36 goals in South American World Cup qualifiers, solidifying his status as the all-time leading scorer.

Looking toward the future, Messi has not provided any hints about his retirement but mentioned he will only participate in the next World Cup if he feels physically fit.

“I’m excited, eager. It’s day by day, feeling the sensations. If I feel good, I enjoy it; if not, I’d rather not be there,” he stated, noting that the nine months until the tournament begins “is a long time.”

Argentina has already secured its place in the World Cup, leading the South American qualifying standings with 38 points.

Meanwhile, Venezuela, aiming for its first World Cup, remains in seventh place with 18 points but still has a chance to qualify for an intercontinental playoff.
