Late Midfielder Brian Banda’s Funeral Set For Thursday

FC Platinum midfielder Brian Banda, who died in a tragic car crash on Sunday along the Zvishavane–Bulawayo highway, will be laid to rest this Thursday at West Park Cemetery in Bulawayo.
The 29-year-old’s sudden passing has left Zimbabwe’s football community in mourning, with tributes pouring in from clubs, fans, and sporting institutions.
Banda’s family home in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, became a place of mourning on Tuesday as footballers gathered to pay their final respects.
Despite rivalries on the field, players from various teams stood side by side in unity, reflecting the deep bonds shared off the pitch. “I had a call with him on Saturday, and we had agreed to meet on Sunday in Bulawayo. I didn’t know it would be our last conversation,” said Genius Mutungamiri.
Their grief was shared by others who had known Banda closely. “We played for different teams, but off the field we were buddies. We would joke and mock each other — I’m pained he is no more,” said George Majika.
Irvine Munkombwe added, “As players, we are devastated that we could lose such a talent in a wink.”
According to ZBC, Banda’s funeral will take place on Thursday, with a large turnout expected from fellow players, supporters, and members of the football community.
Banda, who previously played for Highlanders FC before joining FC Platinum, was known for his discipline, leadership, and technical brilliance.
He had also represented Zimbabwe at national level and was widely respected as a mentor to younger players.
His death has triggered an outpouring of sorrow across the football fraternity. FC Platinum described him as “a remarkable player and beloved teammate,” while the Premier Soccer League and Zimbabwe Football Association lauded his professionalism and legacy.
Banda’s passing leaves a deep void in Zimbabwean football. As the nation prepares to say its final goodbyes, he will be remembered not just for his talent, but for the humility and unity he inspired beyond the game.
