Kariba Hospital Worker Dies After Falling into Ditch to Escape Elephant – The Kariba community has been left in mourning following the tragic death of Gloria Konde, a dedicated nurse aide at Kariba District Hospital, who lost her life in a human-wildlife conflict incident on Sunday morning.
According to reports, Konde was walking to church with her three children in the Heights suburb when they encountered a lone elephant.
In an attempt to escape, she reportedly slipped and fell into a small ditch.

The elephant then advanced toward her, resulting in fatal injuries before fleeing the scene.
Eyewitnesses said her children, who were walking slightly ahead, rushed to alert neighbours, who later assisted in notifying authorities.
Mashonaland West legislator Hon. Mutsa Murombedzi confirmed the incident, describing it as a painful reminder of the growing human-wildlife conflict in the Kariba area.
“We woke up to heartbreaking news. Human-wildlife conflict has claimed a dedicated worker at Kariba District Hospital,” said Hon. Murombedzi. “She was on her way to church with her children when the elephant charged. She tried to run, fell into a ditch, and sadly did not survive. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this very difficult time.”
She added that the situation in Kariba has reached critical levels, calling for immediate intervention from wildlife authorities.
“This incident shows how serious the conflict has become. We urge the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to strengthen response measures and protect communities living near wildlife zones,” he said.
Local residents have also expressed concern, saying elephants frequently roam into residential areas in search of food and water, especially during the dry season.
